Subverbo are group of students studying BA Applied Music at Strathclyde University. The line up includes a mixture of Jazz, Rock and Celtic music - coming together to perform a unique sound. Euan Malloch, 17, Kirkintilloch, Guitar
Euan began studying guitar alongside his brother Angus at Yamaha Music School (YMS), Glasgow 6 years ago. Because of his exceeding talents, Euan has just recently taken up a post as the youngest ever guitar tutor to be employed by Yamaha. Euan also plays drums/percussion/bass guitar and whistle and is the lead guitarist of well-respected Glasgow based band Experience.
Brian McKenna, 19, Wishaw, Drums/Percussion
Brian is now in his second year doing a BA degree in Applied Music at the University of Strathclyde. Brian has worked extensively with jazz orchestras, concert bands, songwriters and various rock bands. He collected the gold award at the Scottish National Concert Band Championships, before going on to be award a silver in the UK finals in 2004, which allowed Brian to tour in Majorca in 2005. He currently plays with Glasgow singer/songwriter Jamie Sellers and funk rock band Experience. Brian also plays in The University of Strathclyde Improvisation Ensemble.
Joe Rattray, 19, Dundee, Bass Guitar
Joe is a multi-instrumentalist studying BA Applied Music at Strathclyde University, specialising in both double bass and bass guitar. Joe is widely known for his talents on guitar/drums and percussion. He also has played with many rock, funk and Jazz bands. Joe plays in The University of Strathclyde Jazz Orchestra.
Joe's extensive range of influences includes - Stevie Wonder, Igor Stravinsky, John Coltrane, Black Sabbath and Frank Zappa.
Chris Waite, 18, Chirnside, Pipes/Whistle/Guitar/Flute
Now attending first year at Strathclyde University, studying BA Applied Music, he is a well sought after Piper and Whistle player. Chris was a member of The National Centre of Excellence (2004-2006) studying Pipes under Iain MacFadyen and Whistle/Flute under Dougie Pincock. Chris has won may Piping competitions all around Scotland and his music has taken him all over the world, including, recently Canada. Chris also plays guitar (taught by Jack Evans) and Bohran (taught by Martin O'Neill) Chris is influenced by such musicians such as Fraser Fifield, Mike McGoldrick, Martyn Bennet and Nitin Sawhney. Chris currently plays in Trad-fusion band Junction Pool.
Sandie Forbes, 19, Kirkcaldy, Fiddle/Vocals
Originally a classically trained violinist, (previous member of The University of St Andrews String Orchestra, currently in The University of Strathclyde Symphony Orchestra and Improvisation Ensemble) Sandie branched out to a desire in traditional music at the age of 14. She is well known for working as a trio with guitarist virtuoso Sandy Stanage, and Sangster's singer Fiona Forbes. As well as appearing as a soloist and as part of a band, Bodega, winners of BBC Radio 2 young folk award 2005-2006, around many festivals (Niel Gow festivals, Fiddle 2004, Lang Spoon Festival 2006, Celtic Connections 2006) and folk clubs (The Acoustic Music Club, Kirkcaldy. Glenfarg Village folk Club, Falkirk Folk Club, The Star, Glasgow and many more) around Scotland and mainland Europe. Sandie was a previous student at The National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music (2004 - 2005) where she studied fiddle, Scots Song and Gaelic and is now attending second year at the University Of Strathclyde, studying BA Applied Music. Sandie had her first T.V debut this earlier this year on Gaelic BBC programme De-anis?
Chris Russell, 19, Kirkintilloch, Piano/Vocals
Chris is a keen pianist and singer and is currently in Glasgow-based band Experience (Performing regularly in the Glasgow area; recently the ABC and Liquid Lounge). He has studied piano from the age of 7 and has been a grade 8 Pianist for 4 years. Singing has always been a great love for Chris, as both his parents are graduates of the RSAMD, studying Opera. Both parents are lead vocalists in the RSNO and father; Campbell Russell is a member of the Caledonian Tenors. Song writing and arrangement have proved very important areas of Chris's musicality, having his own songs regularly played on XFM formerly known as Beat 106. Chris is currently also studying in his 2nd year of BA Applied Music at the University of Strathclyde.
